SKIN.​BODIES I

We open the Foyer for visual arts and are starting with the gripping work by an exceptional artist: Edith Saldanha, who is using the two-channel video installation in New York to determine how institutional structures commit violence and turn bodies into places of suppression and resistance. The work addresses the mechanisms through which bodies are disciplined, shaped and forced to assimilate as a means of survival, all within a system that perpetuates social and economic inequalities. At the centre is the materiality of the skin, which serves as the overlap between personal and collective memory, a medium where power structures write their hierarchies, and a place where subjectivity is simultaneously erased and regained.
