Jenny with the Iron Teeth

Economic crisis creates monsters. In 1950s Glasgow, a gang of street children lives in the shadow of a steelworks and a monstrous prison, beneath a Victorian cemetery. In this darkness, they invent the legend of Jenny who sinks her iron teeth into everyone, guilty and innocent alike. But every legend becomes reality if one only believes in it enough: The children band together and begin to hunt Jenny, with consequences that will change the United Kingdom forever.

Commissioned by the Staatstheater, the Brexit-tested Scottish writer A. L. Kennedy investigates what happens to a community systematically stripped of its freedom, truth, prosperity, health and even its own voice. Yet even in the face of horror, humour and the indomitable power of language endure.
