Hounded by witches, consumed by ambition, backed by the Lady: Macbeth walks on a trail of corpses to reach the Scottish throne. While his wife’s guilty conscience drives her to madness, he only becomes ever more shameless in his grasp for power.
Giuseppe Verdi, who saw in Shakespeare a kindred spirit, tells a gripping musical tale and a hauntingly topical study of the loss of morality on the climb to power with Macbeth. Kateryna Sokolova’s stunning production shows that tyrants are not always created by portentous forces, but rather by their own lust for power.
