La Cage aux Folles (The Cage of Ma­d­wo­men)

“I Am What I Am” is the hit and centrepiece of La Cage aux Folles: “I am what I am,” sings Albin, a.k.a. the drag queen Zaza, “and what I am needs no excuses!” That is, until his foster son Jean-Michel wants to marry and tries to convince his ultra-conservative in-laws that his own family is entirely normal. But what to do with his second dad?

Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein created a cult musical in which the brevity and humour of a French boulevard comedy are used to combine serious subject matter with prime entertainment. Audience darling Gaines Hall will be returning to Nuremberg to portray the role of Zaza.
