The sea already sounds whipped up in the overture to the opera The Wreckers. Here, one lives from that which the storms have washed up from the sea. Out of the water also comes Tirrenio, with a vibrant and virtuosic divertissement, so that he and his nymphs can stultify the ball guests in Henze’s ballet Ondine.
Britten’s Sea Interludes – impressive studies of a character at odds with himself – focus on the sea as a reflection of the soul. Tchaikovsky’s own disjointedness is brought to life in his Symphony No. 5. He personally believed that the world was a “failure”, but audiences think otherwise: The symphony remains one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved works.
PROGRAMME:
Ethel Smyth: Overture of the opera "The Wreckers"
Hans Werner Henze: “Jeux des Tritons”, divertissement from the ballet Ondine for piano and orchestra
Benjamin Britten: Four Sea Interludes from "Peter Grimes"
Peter Tschaikowsky: Symphony No. 5 in e-Moll op. 64
