Jewish author and Nuremberg native Hermann Kesten fled National Socialist persecution in 1933, first going to the Netherlands before continuing on to France and the USA. During this time he supported others who had also fled, and published exile literature. He won many awards after the war, including the Georg Büchner Prize, as well as the Culture Award of the City of Nuremberg in 1954. Kesten was granted honorary citizenship in 1980. His former schools, the Bismarckschule and the Melanchthon-Gymnasium, join the Hermann-Kesten-Gesellschaft commemorate his 125th birthday with a scenic reading.
