The Piedmont region is known for its cultural treasures, the Alps, its good wines – and for FIAT. In his “Trittico” Pizzini opens with a eulogy to beauty and the peace of the natural world before swerving in the third movement into the pulsating bustle of Turin’s car-making industry.
In contrast, Atterberg’s river (Swedish: Älven) wends its way in (almost) pristine surroundings from its source to the sea. Only when it reaches port can steamships be heard. With its tonal colour and full-bodied sound, Atterberg’s symphonic poetry is in the best Late Romantic tradition. And lastly, for a complete “return to nature”, we turn to Schumann’s “Rhenish Symphony”, which is devoid of any auditory allusion to industrialisation.
PROGRAMME:
Carlo Alberto Pizzini: Al Piemonte, a symphonic triptych for orchestra
Kurt Atterberg: Älven – från fjällen till havet, op. 33
Robert Schumann: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, op 97, the “Rhenish”
