Karl Amadeus Hartmann opted in the 1930s for “inward emigration” and refused to let his works be performed in Nazi Germany. His “Symphonic Hymns”, too, were intended to gather dust in a drawer – literally, since they were discovered among his papers after his death. Composed in the early 1940s, they are an impressive testimony to a truculent spirit.
Anton Bruckner had the German spirit in mind when he dedicated the second movement of his Eighth Symphony to the “German Michel”. In his epic symphony Bruckner, who remained a quirky, solitary figure on the Viennese scene, covers a huge range of emotional states, leaving his listeners enthralled.
