Auferstehung

Mahler’s “Resurrection Symphony” is a celebration of life and an expression of conviction that it extends beyond the earthly realm. In this work featuring a full orchestra, two soloists and a large choir, Mahler traces the stations of an exemplary life, with its moments of happiness, disappointments, triumphs and failures and culminating in an overwhelming hope for redemption in the face of death. The music is a balancing act between solemnity and folk song and dancing. A human being’s physical and spiritual duality is rendered here in rousing symphonic form, with the work drawing a line under the 19th century and setting the course for the future of music.
