Born in 1974 in Rennes, Samuel Thery went to school in Sèvres where he gained his vocational training certificate in music. After graduating, he decided to work in theatre. While the job of sound engineer seemed a logical choice for this drummer, it was lighting that caught his imagination. The abundance of colours and the search for effects rapidly became his primary passion. For nearly 10 years, he worked for the big names in French theatre and was involved in designing the lighting for monumental stages.
In 2010, he discovered the world of dance with its rules and codes that differed from those used for large-scale shows. He has therefore developed a different way of listening, in order to reflect the widest possible range of emotions. Light is no longer simply an accessory.
Involved in "Terrasses" in July 2010, organised in the open air by the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, he worked with Jean-Christophe Maillot for the first time in creating the lighting. He worked with the choreographer again on Opus 50, LAC and on this occasion, joined the Ballets de Monte-Carlo where he will perform the lighting of many pieces: Blind Willow (Ina C. Johannessen), Woman in the Room (Carolyn Carlson), Kill Bambi, Arithmophobia, Unicorn, L’enfant et les sortilèges (Jeroen Verbruggen), Cy Twombly Somehow (Marie Chouinard), But behind the Bridge (Natalia Horecna), The Lavander Folies (Joseph Hernandez), Le Baiser de la Fée (Vladimir Varnava), Atman (Goyo Montero), F(ê)aite de la danse (lighting of the whole manifestation), Switch, Core Meu, Coppel-i.A (Jean-Christophe Maillot).
