Patrick Bannwart, born in Wettingen/Switzerland, studied stage design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna after training as a theatre painter at Zurich Opera House. Since 2004, he has worked closely with director David Bösch, for whose theatre productions he has designed numerous set designs, including at the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Schauspielhaus Zurich, the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Burgtheater in Vienna, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and the opera houses in Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Lyon. Since 2010, Patrick Bannwart has also been responsible for the set and video design of David Bösch's opera productions: for the Salzburg Festival, the Bavarian State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Theater Basel, the National Opera in Amsterdam, the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, the Opéra National de Lyon and most recently at the Semperoper Dresden for "Frau ohne Schatten". Together with Falko Herold, they also invented the new format of "Graphic Opera", which premiered in 2021 with the production "Weisse Rose" in co-production with the Hamburg State Opera and the German-French cultural broadcaster ARTE and won the Rolf Mares Prize and the Golden Prague Prize.
