The internationally successful choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti was born in Rome. He completed his dance training at the Roman Opera, where he was also a dancer from 1972 to 1983. In 1984 he went to Reggio Emilia to join Aterballetto under the artistic direction of Amedeo Amodio. For ten years he was a member of the renowned dance ensemble, until he finally devoted himself entirely to working as a choreographer. His first creation, ʺSei in Movimento“, premiered in 1990. From 1997 to 2007, he was the artistic director of Aterballetto. In February 2008, Cristina Bozzolini was entrusted with the artistic direction of the Aterballetto; however, Mauro Bigonzetti remains committed to his former ensemble as chief choreographer. He then returned to working as a freelance choreographer. In 2016, he directed the Corpo di Ballo del Teatro alla Scala, the ballet company of La Scala in Milan.
Mauro Bigonzetti has staged his works with numerous companies worldwide, including the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, the New York City Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the English National Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet, the Staatsballett Berlin, the Stuttgart Ballet, the Ballet of the Staatsoper Hannover, the Ballet of the Musiktheater im Revier, the Gauthier Dance Company and the Nuremberg Ballet (2013 "Cantata" and 2016 "Antiche Danza“).
