Johan Inger, born in Stockholm, received his training at the Royal Swedish Ballet School and the National Ballet School in Toronto, Canada. He began his career at the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1985. Johan Inger followed the call of the renowned choreographer and ballet director Jiří Kylián to the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) one year later. After his first choreographies in workshops at the NDT, Inger created his first own piece "Mellantidʺ for the Holland Dance Festival. In 2003 he left the Nederlands Dans Theater and became artistic director of the Cullberg Ballet in Sweden for which he created numerous works. In the summer of 2008 he resigned from this position to devote himself entirely to choreography and to work throughout Europe. He creates for many companies around the globe, such as Goteborgs Operan, Ballet Basel, Swedish National Ballet, Compañia Nacional de Danza, Aterballetto, Lyon Opera Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo and, of course, Nederlands Dans Theater, where he held the position of house choreographer from 2009 to 2016. Between 2016 and 2022 Johan Inger choreographed, among others, his own versions of the story ballets "Petrushka" and "Sleeping Beauty" (ʺAuroras Napʺ) as well as full-length works such as "Carmenʺ, "Peer Gyntʺ and "Don Juanʺ. In 2016 he received the Benois de la Danse Award for his ballet "Carmenʺ (CND-Madrid) and the piece "One on One" (NDT2) as well as the Danza & Danza Award for his piece "Bliss". In 2020 he was awarded Best Italian Production (Aterballetto) for "Don Juan". In 2022, Johan Inger became artistic director of Take Off Dance, a training programme for aspiring professional dancers aged 18-24 in Seville.
